What’s happening to me?
A familiar complaint in perimenopause and menopause is that skin that was once normal—or even oily—has become extremely dry, itchy, rough or unexpectedly sensitive. Ordinary lotion may seem to disappear without helping, and facial products or fragrance that were once comfortable may suddenly sting.
Changing hormone levels can affect skin hydration, thickness and elasticity. Canada’s Women and Diversity Health Guide to Menopause includes loose and dry skin among possible body changes. That does not mean every new rash or itch is caused by menopause: eczema, allergies, medications, thyroid disease and other conditions can look similar.

Before trying something new: introduce one product at a time, patch-test when practical, and stop if it causes persistent burning, swelling, hives or a worsening rash. Seek medical advice for severe or widespread itch, broken or infected skin, a changing mole, or symptoms that do not settle.
1. When Lotion Suddenly Isn’t Enough
If a light pump lotion no longer lasts, a balm or cream in a tube or tub may give a more substantial layer. Applying it to slightly damp skin after a short, lukewarm shower can also help reduce water loss.
Keep in mind: “Fragrance-free” and “unscented” are not always the same. If scent has become a trigger, check the ingredient list and patch-test.

Keep in mind: Exfoliating-acid lotions can sting irritated, cracked or broken skin. They are not interchangeable with a bland everyday moisturizer. Start on a small area, use less often than the label maximum, and stop if irritation builds.
A 12% glycolic-acid body lotion for rough texture. Start slowly and keep it away from broken, freshly shaved or already irritated skin.

3. When Everything Suddenly Irritates You
New sensitivity to fragrance and familiar facial products is another recurring complaint. A short, fragrance-free formula may be easier to troubleshoot because it introduces fewer variables.
Keep in mind: Do not keep using a product that consistently burns. Persistent facial redness, scaling around the eyes or mouth, or swelling deserves assessment rather than repeated product experiments.

4. When Showering Makes the Dryness Worse
Hot water, long showers and high-foam cleansers can leave already-dry skin feeling tighter. Shorter lukewarm showers, washing only where needed and switching to a gentler cleanser may be more comfortable. Colloidal-oatmeal and eczema-focused products are also repeatedly suggested for itchy skin; check the ingredient list, because not every eczema-labelled product contains colloidal oatmeal.
Keep in mind: Even a gentle cleanser can irritate an individual person. Stop if burning, redness or itch consistently worsens.
A shower oil for very dry or sensitive skin. It can replace a high-foam body wash when cleansing seems to leave skin tight; rinse well and remember that oil can make the tub slippery.
A fragrance-free cleansing cream marketed for dry and eczema-prone skin. It offers a lower-foam alternative when ordinary body wash feels stripping.
5. When You’re So Dry You Need to Seal It In
This is the “slugging” or problem-spots category: ointments and balms form an occlusive layer that slows water loss. They do not add water by themselves, so try them over slightly damp skin or a plain moisturizer.
Keep in mind: On the face, an occlusive layer can also trap irritating products underneath it. Do not seal strong acids, retinoids or medicated creams under an ointment unless a clinician has advised it.
A petrolatum-based ointment for small, very dry or cracked areas. It works by reducing water loss, so it is usually most useful over slightly damp skin or moisturizer.
A fragrance-free ointment with petrolatum, ceramides and hyaluronic acid. A practical option for lips, hands or other dry spots when cream alone does not last.
6. When Sunscreen Suddenly Feels Awful
Dry or reactive skin can turn sunscreen into a usability problem: it may sting, burn, feel tight, pill over moisturizer or cling to flaky areas. The best sunscreen is one you can apply generously and consistently, so texture and comfort matter alongside the labelled SPF and broad-spectrum protection.
Keep in mind: Mineral does not automatically mean non-irritating, and “sensitive skin” on a label is not a guarantee. Patch-test when practical, moisturize first if needed and stop using a product that persistently burns.
A tinted mineral facial sunscreen with SPF 50. A mineral filter and fragrance-free formula may suit some reactive-skin users, although tint, feel and shade match are highly individual.
An untinted ultra-fluid facial sunscreen with SPF 50+. Its light texture may sit more comfortably over moisturizer for some people, but any sunscreen can sting sensitive skin.
7. The Little Dry-Skin Problems Nobody Warns You About
Menopause-related dryness is not always an all-over problem. It may show up as cracked hands, stubborn feet, chapped lips or a small patch that needs something portable. These targeted formats can be easier than carrying a full-size tub everywhere.
Keep in mind: Deep heel cracks, bleeding fissures, spreading redness, warmth, drainage or persistent pain deserve assessment—especially if you have diabetes, poor circulation or reduced sensation.
A concentrated hand cream intended for very dry, cracked hands. Apply a small amount and stop if damaged skin becomes more irritated.
A fragrance-free lip ointment for dry, chapped lips. It is a targeted option rather than an all-over facial moisturizer.
A larger squeeze-tube format of an occlusive ointment. It can be easier to dispense for hands, elbows or other frequently treated spots, but it is still the same basic sealing strategy—not a separate treatment.
A 10% urea foot cream for thick, dry skin on the feet. Urea may sting fissures or broken skin, so begin cautiously and seek care for deep, painful or infected cracks.
A solid balm stick for chafed or dry spots. The no-mess format can be convenient in a handbag or desk drawer, especially for knuckles and small friction-prone areas.
A simpler way to test products
- Change one product at a time so you can tell what helped—or what irritated you.
- Use a bland moisturizer as the baseline; add exfoliating or “firming” products only if you actually want them.
- Give dryness a little time, but do not dismiss a persistent rash, severe itch or pain as “just menopause.”
